Abstract

|
Reserpine and chlorpromazine has been widely used in the clinic as antihypertensive drugs and also tranquilizers, but it has a number of unwanted side effects of these drugs in various organs when used for long period.
This experimental study was carried in rats to observe how these drugs influence histopathologically on digestive organs, such as buccal mucosa, stomach, duodenum and salivary gland when used for short and long durations.
The results could be summarized as follows:
1) The reserpine treated group and the chlorpromazine treated group showed diminished activity of mucous secreting cells, compared with non-treated group.
2) The reaction of mucous screting cells has more tendency to diminish in the chlorpromazine treated group than in the reserpine treated group.
3) The reaction of mucous secreting cells of buccal and submandibular gland has more tendency to diminish in treated long term group than in treated short term group.
4) The reaction of mucous secreting cells of gastric and duodenal mucous membrane has more tendency to diminish in treated short term group than in treated long term group.
